Orange County Uechi-Ryu Karate

Adult Black Belt Program
FOR WHITE BELTS
(1st rank is called JyuKyu)
So you've started your Uechi-Ryu Karate journey huh? Excellent!
As you begin to learn your basic blocks, kicks, and punches, there are a number of traditional exercises you will learn as well.
Being taught a single technique (punch, kick, block) is like being handed a single tool (hammer, screw driver, wrench).
A Kata (Formal Exercise) is like being handed a new tool box with many tools already inside.
The first Kata you will learn is called
SANCHIN KATA
The word SANCHIN roughly translates as
THREE BATTLES.
The three battles are between your
BODY, MIND, and SPIRIT.
The Kata is considered a highly meditative exercise because you focus more on what YOU'RE doing than anything outside of you in the environment.
The second traditional exercise you will learn is called
HOJO UNDO
These are a series of isolated techniques from our other Kata and Drills.
The videos provided here are meant to aid you in your learning process.
The Hojo-Undo video was intentionally created for you practice along with at home.
Sanchin Kata
One of the original katas of
Uechi-Ryu Karate.
A visibly simple but incredibly complex arrangement of techniques and body positioning.
The refinement of muscle tension, technique execution, breathing, and body mechanics is a lifetime of study.
Sanchin is considered the foundation of Uechi-Ryu Karate
and is tested at every rank level.
