Orange County Uechi-Ryu Karate

Junior Black Belt Program
FOR YELLOW BELTS
By now you've done a lot of sparring.
You're probably getting real good at
blocking kicks and punches too.
After we block a punch or kick, we can hit our opponent back and score a point because of
something they are doing
or
something they are NOT doing
To make sure that WE'RE not the one who is making those mistakes we
begin to learn
SANCHIN KATA
(Pronounced "Sawn-Chin Ka-Ta"")
It's a lot harder to do then it looks.
We don't want to make any mistakes.
This is a shortened version of
SANCHIN KATA
and is called
SANCHIN SHORT FORM
MEMORIZE IT!
The word SANCHIN means
THREE BATTLES
The "battles" are between our
MIND, BODY, and SPIRIT.
Our MIND makes the mistake of getting distracted, not paying attention, and not remembering what to do.
Our BODY makes the mistake of not being in the shape it needs to be.
We want our arms and legs to be somewhere special so they can protect us. We want our muscles to move in special ways so we can hit better.
Our Spirit makes the mistake of giving up, not trying your best, and feeling defeated.
To do SANCHIN correctly takes a long time.

To help you learn and practice at home, you can watch the video and print out the
instructions.
